MySQL Information

MySQL is the world's most popular open-source database. The MySQL database was created and is now maintained by MySQL AB in Sweden. MySQL was built with the premise that a web database should be lean, fast, and inexpensive to license and operate. ASC's PowerLender users can opt for the MySQL database in conjunction with their PowerLender LOS, as several users already have. ASC has undergone substantial formal MySQL training and has significant experience with MySQL, so we are able to augment whatever other MySQL support you are able to obtain.

Below are several articles that portray MySQL positively.

Dumping Microsoft SQL Server: MySQL, PostgreSQL attract big users (2006-07-26 SearchOpenSource.com)
"Indeed, the corporate success of open source databases, most notably MySQL and PostgreSQL, is remarkable. MySQL added 2,000 new enterprise customers in 2005 -- high-profile users such as Caterpiller Inc. and Cardinal Health Inc." LINK

MySQL gets cosy with Microsoft (2006-06-30 The Register)
"Membership is handy for both companies. For Microsoft, it means developers using Windows with MySQL continue using its tools and don't drift off into alternatives. It should also ensure companies who need a low-cost database don't investigate products from Oracle and - as a result - ultimately adopt Linux over Windows, according to MySQL." LINK

MySQL: Workers in 25 countries with no HQ (2006-06-01Fortune)
"That neatly sums up the broader challenge that many companies are confronting: how to nurture a bond among workers who rarely, if ever, meet. Few businesses are as spread out as MySQL, which employs 320 workers in 25 countries, 70 percent of whom work from home." LINK

Taking On the Database Giants](2006-02-06 BusinessWeek Online)
"Of these, Sweden's MySQL has the most momentum. It has been at the open-source database game for a decade, but only in the last few years has that hard work started to pay off. Its free database has been downloaded 100 million times since it was released. A souped-up version, 5.0, was released last October and has been downloaded more than 4 million times." LINK

Road test: Four databases tested (2005-12-23 Builder AU)
"Release 5.0 of MySQL is really taking it to the Oracle and DB2 with advanced features such as cluster support and fault tolerance and in most other departments the features run head to head with the competition. Non-SQL junkies can take heart with the GUIs dramatically reducing the reliance on the CLI, bringing administration and configuration within the realms of the novice. MySQL V5.0 is a compelling product and it is hard to argue against its nomination for the Editor's Choice award." LINK

MySQL Ready for Prime Time (2005-10 SQL Summit)
"The future looks promising for MySQL because version 5.0 makes it competitive for enterprise computing, with capabilities such as transactions, stored procedures, parallel processing and the capacity for very large databases. "The team behind the MySQL Open Source database has launched an enterprise program designed to make it simpler and easier for enterprise IT staffs to adopt MySQL. The program, dubbed MySQL Network, provides both optimized MySQL technology, services and "fast track" answers to technical and licensing questions surrounding MySQL. MySQL Network reflects MySQL's sensitivity to the differences between early adopters and the needs of the new breed of enterprise user." LINK

MySQL can be a transaction manager using XA distributed transactions. Financial applications have requested the Precision Math that is included in 5.0. Exact calculations are possible with well-defined rounding.” LINK

Is MySQL Gearing Up To Take On Oracle? (2005-04-12 NewsFactor Network)
"With new features in the latest version of MySQL, like subqueries and a new binary format, the company has become a stronger competitor against much larger companies, and seems poised to bite into their revenues. Even more importantly, said Garry, MySQL might actually spark some fundamental changes in the market.” LINK

MySQL readies beta of enterprise open source database (InfoWorld 2005-01-04)
"'I think it's a very important release,' said Noel Yuhanna, senior industry analyst at Forrester Research. 'This is going to have some enterprise features like triggers, stored procedures, and views, which are very important -- especially when you're dealing with business applications, especially when you're dealing with packaged applications. This will take MySQL to the next level [in terms of] adoption.' Open source databases soon will be broken up into two categories: easy-to-use offerings and more feature-rich, enterprise-level products, said Yuhanna." LINK
